It's intentionally designed to connect with a variety of ages to inspire those with experience to mentor the next generation, the specialists to leverage their strengths in science and technology, and the synthesists to connect dots that haven't yet been connected. Community groups to enable this will be activated based on my experience launching 18 science-tech communities around the world. The entire premise is positioned that those who are alive today shape the future that takes place in this film. Reading/learning, the environment, and human connection being the main points of emphasis. I am a neuroscientist by training originally, so everything is based on real research published or live today. The bigger picture connects to humans beyond the screen. For instance, the VR game you see played in the trailer will be made into a real game that people can play (I've already developed an MVP for a similar type of game, although it won't require backflips to be played). I see a future of film that connects with every viewer beyond when the film ends. I hope we can build this new era together. -Erin Magennis ## Enter a Future World A near future, a good one: a few generations from now, society is driven by rare mineral collection, for medicine and for compute, and has solved every problem but interstellar travel. All disease, aging included, is solved, and everyone is augmented with animal and plant genes. Biology moves between species as carefully as words between languages: a monarch's compass, a squid's speed, a spiny mouse's healing. None of it works without a preserved Earth: every new modification comes from studying animals alive, in their natural habitat. At night the bed reads and heals the body while you sleep. Compute through data verification systems resolved AI hallucinations, and everyone wears personalized AI-powered AR contacts. And a matching system places each person in the life that fits best. It reads their skills and essence, tracked through brain uploads to the chip inside a box every household keeps, and matches them to their job and to where in near-Earth they belong. Nefeli's box is carved from nepheline. Because of the match, every job is fun: school doesn't look like school, homes are grown as much as built, and most work is in Earth and space colonization, with asteroid mining through VR games. The game in the trailer is being built for real: an MVP for a similar game is already built. Nefeli, the only one who never got a complete match, sees something no one else caught, and maps a path to solve the one problem no one could solve: how do we get to the next star? ## The Cast — The Rachi Family (and Friend) ### Nefeli — Teacher *Nefeli: cloud. Galina: calm seas.* Teacher of the matched generation, surfer, generalist: number two in her class growing up. Hazel eyes that change with whatever she's looking at. She can expand to fill any container and contract to fit any other, calm at the center of every chaos, and already whole. Only her box has never lit. Adaptations: Squid perception mod + monarch CRY1. Why it matters in this world: The one thing she's best at is invisible to the instruments. Connections: Cleo (her mother, the verifier who reads her); Dr. Rachi (her father, designed her mods); Mus (her companion, raised by her own hands); Tycho (the grandfather listening at her coordinate) ### Young Nefeli — The Beginning Nefeli as a girl: playing with the discarded animals at her father's clinic, choosing the butterfly mod because she wanted to be free like it. The squid came later, in training. Adaptations: Monarch CRY1, her first. Why it matters in this world: Did it hurt the squid? Will it hurt me? Connections: Nefeli (who she becomes); Monarch CRY1 (her childhood mod); Dr. Rachi (her father's world) ### Cleo — Mom *Cleo: the muse who records. Alethea: truth, unconcealment.* Nefeli's mother, keeper of the verified record and the archive of things. Her softness is protection for what can't protect itself, and she can read whether any feeling is genuine. Why it matters in this world: Don't trust. Verify. Connections: Nefeli (the daughter she works to fully see); Dr. Rachi (yin and yang, she verifies what he creates); Tycho (her father) ### Dr. Rachi — Dad *Rachi: ridge.* A doctor whose practice is human augmentation: implanting genetic modifications built on genes studied from animals, matched carefully to each person. Larger-than-life, host of the dinner parties, half his clinic a window onto the wild, and on his office wall: the anatomy of a wing. He designed the mods worn across the family. Not yet pictured. Why it matters in this world: Mods begin at his bench. Connections: Nefeli (daughter, designed her mods); Cleo (his wife); Eleni (daughter); Squid RNA Self-Editing (the science he works in) ### Tycho — Grandpa *Tycho: a nod to Tycho Brahe, who charted the sky before telescopes. His array is Cass: a Cassini nod.* Dark-patch astronomer, Nefeli's grandfather, keeper of the destination catalog. He points his array Cass at the emptiest parts of the sky, because that's where the galaxies hide, and he sees Nefeli the same way. He says things that don't quite make sense until, later, they do. The penguin picture on his wall says I WILL FLY, I WILL FLY. Why it matters in this world: Of course penguins can fly. They just chose a medium nobody credits. Connections: Nefeli (hears writing where others hear noise); Cleo (his daughter) ### Eleni — Sister Nefeli's sister, a cultivator: growing food and sunflowers under beamed sunlight on the Moon, making every place she touches beautiful and livable. She sings in a band, and the right note, held together, can break what nothing else can. Why it matters in this world: Even with the robots, there's still an art to everything. Connections: Nefeli (her sister); Boy 1 (her son); Boy 2 (her son); Cleo (her mother); Dr. Rachi (her father) ### Boy 1 — Eleni's Son The older of Eleni's boys: a climber, matched early to the Moon. He howled the night the box lit. Adaptations: Climbing-grip mod. Connections: Eleni (his mother); Boy 2 (his brother); Nefeli (his aunt) ### Boy 2 — Eleni's Son The younger of Eleni's boys: howled just as loud, never far behind his brother. Adaptations: Climbing-grip mod. Connections: Eleni (his mother); Boy 1 (his brother); Nefeli (his aunt) ### Outis — Best Friend *A name whose story is its spelling: in a world where names grow longer, his never did.* Nefeli's neighbor and closest friend, the one who always believed she'd find her fit. A gamer's reflexes earned him the asteroid belt, and space is where his name changed. Why it matters in this world: Some postings you take alone. Connections: Nefeli (near-couple, closest friend); Lyra (asked her to carry a recording); The Aurora (a dawn departure, an open question) ### Mus — The Spiny Mouse *Mus: Latin for mouse. The kids named him before anyone checked his species.* A spiny mouse from the clinic's discarded line, the ones young Nefeli used to play with. Raised by her, mislabeled by the kids, more than his tag. Why it matters in this world: Heals without scarring. Connections: Nefeli (raised and modified by her); Spiny Mouse Regeneration (his species' real biology); The Capsule (rides strapped in beside her) ### The Squid — The Signature The animal behind Nefeli's perception mod, and a presence of its own in the deep: it bumped her board, kept pushing, and turned a lost day into play. When you stop forcing, it finds you. Why it matters in this world: You don't know a thing until it pushes back. Connections: Nefeli (the mod's source); Squid RNA Self-Editing (its real biology) ## The Cast — Nefeli's Students ### Rowan — The Rival Her training-era rival, functionally tied for first until Mars chose him. Lumberjack-strong and braggy in a crowd; alone, he grows the first forests and meditatively counts tree rings. Not many people on Mars yet, which is how he likes it. Why it matters in this world: Mars has its first forests. Connections: Nefeli (the rival matching split from her) ### Mo — Engineer *Short for a longer name, revealed only when it is finally read.* In a world where rockets are school projects, Mo is the one building them: a prankster engineer with a crow mod who remembers every face and voice, and can predict exactly where you're about to mess up. Adaptations: Crow mod. Why it matters in this world: Someone still has to build the rockets. Connections: Nefeli (his teacher); Lyra (classmate) ### Twin 1 — Botanist The botanist twin. In this world every species gets banked: seeds vaulted against the future. With his brother he shows the same shape twice: tree branches and neurons. Why it matters in this world: Nothing living is ever fully lost. Connections: Twin 2 (his twin); Cleo (a seed vault echoes in her basement) ### Twin 2 — Neuroscientist The neuroscientist twin: he runs brain uploads, and asks the bench's own question: what does it mean to be me, if a mind can be uploaded? The true essence of a person is the one thing nobody has solved. Branches and neurons: the same shape twice. Why it matters in this world: Brain uploads exist now. Connections: Twin 1 (his twin); Nefeli (she holds space for him) ### Lyra — DJ *Lyra: the lyre, the constellation, and the brain's lyre-shaped memory structure.* A student who records everything, all the time: modified hearing splits the world into layers nobody else can separate. She plays new tracks against the room until something aligns and gives her chills. At any party, she is the center of it. Adaptations: Modified hearing. Why it matters in this world: Frequency runs this world: DJs are captains. Connections: Nefeli (her teacher); Outis (carries a recording for him); Mo (classmate) ### Developer Matched, and still here by choice: an engineer keeping the records, the archives, and the verified feeds that every Iris reads from. Proof that matching doesn't have to mean leaving. Why it matters in this world: The world's data has to live somewhere. Connections: Rowan (one pole of the cohort); Outis (the other pole) ### Cartographer An architect drawing homes with earthen walls and living light. Her sea-turtle map mod means she always knows exactly where she is. Once a student in Nefeli's class. Adaptations: Sea-turtle map sense. Why it matters in this world: Architecture here learns from how animals build. Connections: Sea Turtle Map Sense (her mod); Nefeli (a former student) ## The Technology ### The Box — The Match Device *Carved from nepheline, the cloud mineral. The looping lines on its lid trace the Lorenz butterfly, the shape of chaos theory.* The device every household keeps: a match glows on the front, a destination on the back. Nefeli's has never lit. Connections: Nefeli (hers has never lit); Nepheline (what it is carved from) ### The Game — The VR Game The VR game from the party in the trailer. The one piece of this world you will get to play yourself. Why it matters in this world: Being built for real, beyond the film. Connections: Nefeli (the party where it is played) ### Iris — The AI *Iris: the goddess who connects worlds, and the iris of your eye.* The personalized AI in each person's contact lens: the world seen through it, the voice of the verified record. Why it matters in this world: It lives in the contact lens. Connections: Nefeli (cannot answer her core question); Cleo (voice of the record she keeps) ### The Bed — The Float Tank The tank-bed in Nefeli's room: minerals in the water, ultrasound waves that read and heal the body overnight, set into an alcove against a wall of stars. Connections: Nefeli (her room); The Box (on the table beside it) ### Interactive Education — The Classroom School doesn't look like school: learning is active, physical, and personalized to each student's style. Instead of times tables, kids race to find the signal hiding in large datasets. Connections: Nefeli (her classroom) ### Living Architecture — The Buildings Bioluminescent and earth-based: homes with earthen walls and living light, designed the way animals design. Connections: Cartographer (her craft) ### Environment Preservation — The Preservation Earth is still the best-matched planet, so resources go into healing it: contaminated places restored, animals studied alive in their own habitats. Why it matters in this world: Preserving Earth is what keeps the mods coming. ### The Capsule — The Vessel The vessel Nefeli rides through The Ride, the film's climactic sequence. Connections: Nefeli (she pilots it); Mus (strapped in beside her); STEVE (the real phenomenon it rides) ### The Aurora — The Ship *Dawn, plus the storm lights.* The ship that departs at dawn on a looping trajectory. Who exactly is aboard stays unclear. Connections: Outis (an open question); Eleni (a rhyme of dawn and sun) ## Key Science Connections ### Spiny Mouse Regeneration Acomys, the only known scarless-healing mammal: skin, hair follicles, and cartilage regrow instead of scarring. Mus's real biology. Connections: Mus (his species) ### Monarch CRY1 A real monarch butterfly gene, CRY1, restores a light-dependent magnetic sense when moved into other species. The strongest real precedent behind the film's mods. Connections: Young Nefeli (her childhood mod); Nefeli (the sense she carries) ### Squid RNA Self-Editing Squid recode over sixty percent of their neural RNA, far more than humans. The real biology behind a squid-style mod for perception speed. Connections: The Squid (the animal itself); Nefeli (her training-era mod); Dr. Rachi (he designed it) ### Sea Turtle Map Sense Sea turtles read Earth's magnetic field as an imprinted position map, not just a compass. The grounding for the world's map-sense mods. Connections: Cartographer (her mod); Monarch CRY1 (the same hidden sense, older) ### STEVE *Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, named by the aurora chasers who found it.* A real, narrow ribbon of storm-heated plasma at spacecraft altitude. The honest physical face behind the film's Ride. Connections: The Capsule (what it rides) ### Nepheline *A real mineral named for the Greek word for cloud.* Used in glass and ceramics, and able to record ancient gas signatures in meteorites. The real science behind the box and the marble. Connections: The Box (carved from it) This is the blueprint for the story of The Ridge. There is more to this world than one page can hold.
